Crest Healthy Smiles 2011 |
On March 2nd, fourteen second and third year dental students participated in Crest Healthy Smiles at the Raleigh Boys Club. There they provided free dental screenings and oral hygiene instruction to over 150 children, ages 6-12. The students noted active decay in a letter to each child’s guardian and recommended nearby affordable clinics for the children to be seen. The children also received toothpaste and a toothbrush as well as a lighted mouth mirror that was used during their exam. It was a great experience for all involved. We hope to have another successful Healthy Smiles event soon to keep the kids smiling! |

On February 2, 2010, UNC ASDA reps and students traveled to Raleigh to participate in State Lobby Day! Students met with many state legislators and talked about the current issues in dentistry. Legislators expressed who proud they were of the great work dental students are doing at UNC School of Dentistry. One issue dental students lobbied for was funding for the Baby Oral Health Program (bOHP). We explained how bOHP is used to educate dental students and primary health care providers how to deliver preventive oral health services to infants and toddlers. It aims to equip dental professionals with the necessary tolls to be comfortable and competent in pediatric services to help shape a trajectory for optimal oral health for NC citizens. Thanks to everyone who participated and made Lobby Day 2010 successful!

ASDA Students joined the North Carolina Dental Society for their annual session meeting in Myrtle Beach this year. Students were given 2 days off of school in order to attend this meeting and they made the most of it. Students attended the mentor social on Friday night as well as the wine cocktail on Saturday. From large group dinners to hours on the beach the students enjoyed the time away from school. Thank you to all of the ASDA mentors, we greatly appreciate all of your help.
