NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Heels Dominate at ACRA National Championship

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Men’s Crew had a golden finish to its 2010-2011 season at the American Collegiate Rowing Association National Championship regatta over Memorial Day weekend. The team sent four boats - the Varsity Four, the Novice Four, a Double, and a Single – to the regatta and achieved impressive results, as all four boats made the grand finals in their respective categories, and the two Fours won it all.

In Sunday’s final, the Men’s Varsity Four edged out Georgia Tech, winners of the Dad Vail championship regatta and the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) regatta, to win their title after a hard fought race that saw UNC up by as much as a boat length before a furious sprint by Georgia Tech cut UNC’s final lead to just 0.4 seconds at the finish line. UNC and Georgia Tech had faced off in the semifinal on Saturday, with Georgia Tech emerging victorious, but UNC clearly had something special saved for the championship race. UNC’s performance was especially surprising considering the Varsity Four had only entered one other race during the spring season, when they raced at the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and placed third. Senior Matt Tucker said, “It was a great way to end our season. We were really tested this year – indeed, Georgia Tech tested us until the last stroke – but we emerged victorious and we couldn’t be happier about it.” The varsity boat lineup was as follows: Armando Chavez (stroke), David Eick, Matt Tucker, Taylor Hewett, and Avery Lee (cox).

Earlier on Sunday, the Men’s Novice Four took the gold in their final, beating shells from prestigious programs such as the University of California – Davis, the University of New Hampshire, and Grand Valley State University. Indeed, the Novice crew made it look easy, winning their heat on Saturday by almost 12 seconds, and their semifinal by 8 seconds. The novice boat lineup was as follows: Ben Saunders (stroke), Scott Fentress, Kyle Lacey, Turner Richmond, and Edgar Puente (cox).

“The team’s hard work this year really paid off,” team captain Taylor Hewett said. “After some tough losses at the SIRA Championship regatta in April, we resolved to focus our energies on ACRAs, and brought a whole new level of focus and intensity to our training; we really inspired each other everyday to be the best athletes we could be. I couldn’t be more proud of this team; it’s just a great way to cap off four years of hard work.”

UNC’s two first place finishes are the team’s first at the ACRA National Championship regatta, which was started four years ago when club programs were prohibited from participating in the IRA National Championship regatta. The ACRA regatta attracts some of the nation’s most impressive crew programs, club or otherwise, such as the University of Virginia, the University of Michigan, Grand Valley State University and many more.

Team travelling to Oak Ridge, TN, to compete in SIRA Champhionship! PDF Print E-mail

The team will be departing tomorrow morning for the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship. Both the novice and varsity teams will be travelling to Oak Ridge, TN, which has probably the most beautiful course the team will see all year. The weather calls for rain, though the temperature will be in the 70s, so conditions should be pretty good.

The varsity squad will be boating a V8 and JV8, while the novice squad will be boating a F8 and two F4+, one heavy and one light. The schedule can be found at https://www.regattacentral.com/index.jsp?tab=regattas

We wish the entire team the best and hope they can come back with medals.
