The CEC intends to create opportunities for students to explore economic ways of thinking outside of their traditional coursework. A core group of students works to coordinate events that enable their peers to investigate how economics affects our lives by exposing them to the frontiers of economic research and reasoning. The Executive Board of the CEC is the central group of students responsible for developing these outlets for extracurricular exposure to economic ideas, and the Club itself is comprised of a larger group of students to whom these programs are targeted and whose participation provides the basis for the Executive Board’s function.
The events we coordinate include a speaker series, in which we strive to feature well-known economists, authors, and researchers as well as local professors and professionals. This series also includes panels in which speakers share their perspectives and discuss or debate with others on a focused topic relating to economics; these sessions are typically facilitated both professors and students involved in their planning. Additionally, we coordinate informal exchanges of information among undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty about UNC's Economics curriculum, current events, and career and research opportunities for Economics majors. Finally, the Club has worked recently to engage a broader cross-section of the student body by coordinating events that are more interactive; through these programs we intend to introduce more students to economics by presenting related topics in a more accessible way while also increasing awareness about the CEC’s activity on campus. For some examples of the programs we have coordinated in the recent past, check out the CEC Blog accessible from this homepage. |
