The Navy and Marine Corps' best are trained here

Battalion Activities

Navy Lab:

Once a week, Midshipmen participate in lab during which they receive the majority of their military instruction.  Held in the Naval Armory, lab is a time to receive necessary instruction, participate in hands-on-learning, and practice their leadership skills.  Activities during lab include briefs, breakout sessions, leadership scenarios, warrior training, drill and formation practice, and sword and weapons handling.  Often, various guest speakers will also attend the weekly lab, offering young Midshipmen the opportunity to speak with seasonsed leaders.

Physical Training (PT):

Throughout the week, Midshipmen participate in endurance, speed, and strength workouts during morning and afternoon PT sessions.  The number of required PT sessions weekly is based on the Midshipman's performance on the Navy or Marine Corp's PT Test.  Also, once a week, every Midshipman attends a Battalion PT where healthy competition builds bonds between Midshipmen and fosters a sense of unity and  comradery.   Most Midshipman also participate in Intramural Sports offered through the University's Campus Recreation department.  Annual favorites include flag football, soccer, basketball, wallyball, and innertube water polo.

Social Functions:

Throughout the year, the unit hosts several social functions where Midshipmen have the opportunity to dress up in either civilian or military dress attire.  These events include Fall Ball, Spring Fling, Dining In, and Mess Nights.  Fall Ball is an annual Consortium event held in celebration of the Navy and Marine Corps' birthdays.  On this night, UNC, Duke, and N.C. State come together for a presentation of graduating seniors, a formal dinner, ceremony, and guest speaker.  Senior officers are invited from the area to join in the festivities.  Spring Fling is a cocktail type of event held in the spring where Midshipmen are invited to bring dates and dress up in civilian attire to share a night of appetizers and dancing.  Several times throughout the year, Marine Options host a Mess Night, which is a relaxed, yet professional function where Midshipmen are giving the opportunity to poke fun at their peers and enjoy an relaxed evening.  At the end of the spring semester, soon-to-be-graduating 1/C Midshipmen come together for a last social event called Dining In.  Although expected to maintain professionalism and dignity, it is a evening similar to a Mess Night and is intended to be full of mockery and chiding.

4/C Orientation:

A week-long indoctrination period for incoming freshmen, 4/C orientation is an excellent opportunity for incoming Midshipmen to make friends and learn the standards and operating procedures of the military.  The program is organized and run by upperclassmen with the supervision of the active duty.

Stadium Cleanups:

The Sunday following every home football game, the NROTC unit spends the morning cleaning Kenan Stadium as a way of raising funds to support Company activities.  Although a tiring process, stadium cleanups build unity and friendships as Midshipmen face the same challenges together.

Color Guard:

Volunteer members of the color guard have the privilege of presenting the colors at university sporting events. These Midshipmen also have the honor of representing the unit at the annual Tulane Drill Meet where they compete against hundreds of other universities and colleges.

Drill Team:

All 4/C Midshipmen, along with volunteer upperclassmen,  compose the unit's drill team.  Practices are held once or twice a week and are supervised by the Drill Team Commander, who is generally a 2/C Midshipman with several years of drilling experience.  As a member of the drill team, a Midshipman will learn not only the basics of armed and unarmed drill, but will learn confidence and bearing as he or she perfects difficult individual and group movements.  The climax of the year is the team's trip to Tulane University in February, where it will compete against many other drill teams from universities and colleges all across the nation.  The trip coincides with Mardi Gras and therefore affords Midshipmen the opportunity to celebrate their hard work with the fun of Mardi Gras.

MWR Events:

Throughout the year, the unit encourages Midshipmen to participate in the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) events that it hosts.  Past events include cookouts, ice-skating, paint-ball, soccer, Army v. Navy flag football, bowling, and movie nights.  These events are opportunities for Midshipmen to relax together and get to know each other outside of the uniform.

Consortium Field Meet:

Every year, UNC joins with Duke and N.C. State to put on an annual Consortium Field Meet.  Held in the Spring on UNC's campus, it is an opportunity for Midshipmen to compete against each other in physical and mental challenges.  Events include relays, tug of war, 4-man pushups, 5-man situps, Ultimate Frisbee, pull-ups, and dodgeball.

Community Service:

The unit is constantly looking for a way to improve its surroundings and is therefore heavily involved in community service.  Every Midshipman is required to perform a set number every semester but most Midshipman find that they have far surpassed that goal as the year closes. Events offered by the unit include service at the local Ronald McDonald house, blood drives, Habitat for Humanity builds, and visits to local hospitals.

Toys for Tots:

Every December, the Semper Fi Society organizes a toy drive benefiting Toys for Tots.  In addition to collecting toys and soliciting donations from area businesses, Semper Fi hosts a local 5k to raise money and awareness for the Toys for Tots organization.
