Nurse Training
Third Class Summer Nurse TrainingAs a Nurse Option, the summer after your freshman year affords you the opportunity to learn about nursing at sea. You will be assigned to the Medical department aboard a ship (usually an aircraft carrier or amphibious ship) and receive hands-on training from your "running mate," a Navy corpsman. Besides the valuable practical experience, you will also learn about the men and women you will lead at sea and the traits that will make you a great officer. Second Class Summer Nurse TrainingUnlike the Navy option midshipman, there is no "second class cruise" for the Nurse option midshipman. Instead, students are enrolled in summer classes at the University to pursue their degree.
First Class Summer Nurse TrainingIn the summer after your junior year, you will be assigned to either a Naval hospital or shore-based Medical Treatment Facility for approximately one month. This training is intended to familiarize you with your duties and responsibilities as a Navy Nurse. You will be trained by a junior officer and gain a more thorough understanding of Navy medicine. If available, a visit to an operational ship will be arranged.
