ARTICLE I – Name
The name of this organization shall be the Carolina Objectivist Forum, herein after referred to in this document as COF.
ARTICLE II – Purpose
COF is an organization dedicated to the continuing study of Objectivism, the philosophy developed by Ayn Rand. This organization will seek to provide for the students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill access to literature, activities, and information concerning the philosophy of Objectivism. It will serve as an information bureau and a center for educational activities, such as discussion groups, and guest speakers.
ARTICLE III – Membership and Participation
Section A: Any student in good standing with the university, and with an interest in advancing the stated purpose of COF, can become a member of the COF. A person can become a member by attending a meeting and expressing an interest in the group. In keeping with UNC-Chapel Hill’s policy of non-discrimination, COF does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, color, age, national origin, religious status or historic religious affiliation, creed, disability, veteran’s status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
Section B: Any member of COF can, at any time, voluntarily withdraw his or her membership from the organization.
Section C: The executive committee of the COF reserves the right to expel a member after a hearing, so long as the expulsion does not violate UNC-Chapel Hill’s non-discrimination policy.
Section D: Participation in COF activities is not limited to members. Non-members are permitted to attend meetings, and events in a manner that is respectful of COF, and its members.
ARTICLE IV – Advisor
Section A: The advisor shall be a full-time faculty or staff employee of UNC-Chapel Hill. He or she will be selected by the executive committee, and in support of the organization’s stated purpose.
Section B: The advisor shall maintain his or her position indefinitely, unless removed by the full consensus of the executive committee, or he or she is no longer an employee of UNC-Chapel Hill, at which time the executive committee will select a replacement advisor.
Article V – Executive Committee
Section A: The executive committee shall consist of a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.
Section B: The President of COF shall be responsible for continuous operation of the club, and represent the club to other organizations.
Section C: The Vice President of COF shall perform the duties of the president in the president's absence, and perform specific tasks delegated by the president.
Section D: The Secretary of COF shall be the custodian of the constitution, handle all communication designated by the president, especially with the membership, and disseminate notices of club events and meetings.
Section E: The Treasurer of COF shall keep the financial records of the club, and report on the financial position of the club when requested to do so by the president. Section F: Should club membership become insufficient to support a full executive committee, or an executive position become otherwise vacant, the president shall assume, or delegate to remaining executive members, those responsibilities left by the vacancy until such time that the position can be filled.
Article VI – Elections
Section A: The executive committee for each term will be selected at a meeting near the end of the previous term as called by the committee for that term. Notification of elections must be sent to members at least one week prior to the election. Subsection 1: The executive committee shall nominate a slate of officers for the next term, which will be submitted for approval by the membership. Approval requires a two-thirds majority vote. If the slate is not approved, open nominations and elections for each position will be held during the meeting at which the selection of the officers is to take place, during which a simple majority is required for approval. In the case of a tie vote, the president will hold the deciding vote.
Section B: Should a term commence without officers being elected during the term prior a by-election must be held. Notification of elections must be sent to members at least one week prior to the election.
Subsection 1: Open nominations and elections for each position will be held during the meeting at which the selection of the officers is to take place, during which a simple majority is required for approval. In the case of a tie vote, the nomination and election process for the tied position will begin anew until the tie is broken.
Section C: A by-election will be called by the remaining officers if any office should become vacant, during which the election procedures as per VI.B.1 shall be followed.
Article VII: Impeachment of Executive Officers
Section A: A member of the executive committee may be removed from office if a two-thirds majority of members so decide at a meeting called by the other executive officers for the purpose of making a decision on this matter. No members may be expelled from the club while impeachment proceedings are pending.
Article VIII: Finances
Article IX: Amendments Section A: Amendments to this constitution must be approved by a majority of the executive committee and then by two thirds of the members voting at a meeting where the amendment is presented. The secretary shall notify each club member of the proposed amendment at least one week prior to the meeting at which it will be considered.Section A: The COF will conduct its financial affairs in a manner consistent with the requirements enumerated in Title V of the UNC-CH Student Government Code.
