What is Phi Sigma Pi?
Phi Sigma Pi is a national honor fraternity, based on the ideals of Scholarship, Leadership and Fellowship. It is a co-educational group designed to bring together college students interested in these ideals. There are many chapters of Phi Sigma Pi located all over the country and, though our practices are similar in many ways, we are all able to add our own style to the proceedings. The local chapter at UNC-CH is called Alpha Kappa.
Are you guys like Alpha Phi Omega (APO)?
NO! While APO is a great organization, it is quite different from Phi Sigma Pi. APO is primarily a service organization, whereas Phi Sigma Pi is an honor fraternity. Phi Sigma Pi is very dedicated to service projects, but that is merely one aspect of what we're all about. More than a club or organization, Phi Sigma Pi stresses the three aspects of its Tripod equally, so that nothing is left out.
What is Alpha Kappa?
Alpha Kappa is the UNC-CH chapter of Phi Sigma Pi. It was founded in 1990, and continues today with its active tradition. Our membership usually fluctuates between 50-70 brothers and, after saying a fond farewell to over 20 graduating seniors at the end of the Spring semester, we will begin the Fall 2009 semester with about 70 brothers. To learn more, check out the page on rush.
How do I join?
AK has two rushes each year, one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester. Each semester, letters and emails are sent to many students across campus providing details about Meet Nights, where you can come to learn more about initiation. There are also usually ads in the classified section of the Daily Tarheel, and when we can we paint a cube in front of the Student Union. To join, just come to a Meet Night, and find out what we’re all about! See the rush page for dates and times of Meet Nights.
What are the requirements to join?
Joining a fraternity takes a great deal of time and dedication to its ideals. A good attitude, a desire to meet some of the best people at UNC, and a willingness to try new things are promising starting points. Since we are an honor fraternity, there are also academic requirements, specifically at least a 3.2 GPA, and between 12 and 90 hours of academic credit. This does mean that if you are a first-semester freshman, you must wait until spring semester to obtain the minimum 12 credit hours necessary to rush. If you want to know more check out the online list of more detailed requirements. You can also receive this information by going to one of our Meet Nights.
What does Alpha Kappa do?
Being an active chapter means we do a lot. Over the course of a semester you can expect to participate in service projects at the UNC Hospital, cook meals at the Ronald McDonald house, usher Carolina basketball games, dance the night away at either our Spring Formal or Fall Semi-formal, and spend a whole lot of time hanging out with your fellow Brothers. For a better look at what we do, check out our picture pages.
