[RHA vs. Department of Housing]

Residence Hall Association

  • Commonly referred to as RHA

  • One of the three largest student organizations on campus

  • Membership includes all 8,600 on-campus residents

  • Serves to represent residents' concerns and provide desirable programs within and among residential communities

  • Provides enhancements in the residence halls, including pool tables, DVDs, cleaning supplies, games, recreational items, etc.

  • Structure includes an RHA Executive Board, 15 Community Governments whose governors serve on the Board of Governors, and various committees including the Programing Committee and Enhancements Committee

  • Mission Statement: We commit to enriching and maintaining a comfortable and supportive living and learning community by representing residents' concerns, offering diverse programming, and providing desirable residence hall enhancements.

Department of Housing and Residential Education

  • Commonly referred to as DHRE or HRE

  • A department in the Division of Student Affairs
  • Represented by paid housing staff, including Community Directors, Community Managers, Resident Advisors (RAs), Office Assistants, Assignments Officers, etc.

  • Facilitates contracting/re-contracting and determines room assignments

  • Handles maintenance requests. If you have a service request visit fac.unc.edu and click Fix My room!

  • Provides various in-community programs put on by the Resident Advisors.  The RAs also work wiht RHA's Community Governments to provide programs

  • Mission Statement: DHRE consists of educators, full time professional staff, and para-professional student staff who, through the use of exemplary facilities management, organizational effectiveness, student-centered learning, and assessment initiatives, strive for student success, self-awareness and satisfaction
