Global Health is Public Health. The recent H1N1 influenza outbreak reminds us of the extent to which we are living in a globalized world. Pandemics like this demonstrate how our health and well-being depends—to varying degrees—on the health and well-being of people living all across the world.
Reflected in the incorporation of “Global” into the school of public health’s name, UNC has never been more committed to global health. UNC’s esteemed faculty and students work in more than 45 countries, conduct innovative, upper-level research, and educate many of the world’s leaders in the global health field.
But there is still a need to increase UNC’s engagement with global health and the quality of its interactions with the rest of the state, nation, and world.
The mission of SGHC is to create awareness and understanding of global health issues among the UNC community through education, advocacy, and service. Toward this end, SGHC organizes a number of events throughout the academic year, including:
- A Health & Human Rights seminar series - Service opportunities to educate and serve in our local community - A multimedia series of events focusing on the impact of HIV/AIDS - Employment discussion panels to help students find jobs in the global arena in the fall - Educational opportunities for students and faculty to learn about global health - The Global Health Fashion Show in the spring to raise funds for an international organization
Whether a prospective or current student, faculty or community member, alumnus or public health practitioner, we hope you will join us in advocating for, educating, and serving the global health community.
Our website contains up-to-date calendars, information, and links, as well as instructions for joining our electronic mailing list. We look forward to hearing from you, learning from your experiences, answering any questions you may have, and finding creative ways to help you get involved.
Thanks for your interest!
Sincerely,
Daniel Cothran and Juliana Thornton, Executive Co-chairs, SGHC
