Candidates for SPH-Student Government Co-Presidents

Mohamed Jalloh, MPH Candidate (2010), HBHE

Hey Everyone!

I’m Mohamed Jalloh, a first year MPH student in the Health Behavior and Health Education Department. This year, I’ve had the distinct privilege and honor to serve as your treasurer of the School of Public Health Student Government (SPH-SG). In this position, I was able to work closely with our co-presidents, Lauren Thie and Amanda Greenberg to ensure that the SPH-SG is fiscally sound and stable. Through my involvement in the SPG-SG I now have a better understanding of the inner workings of the organization and the issues that we advocate for on your behalf as students of the Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Also, as a senator and Appropriations Committee member of the Graduate and Professional Student Federation (GPSF), I’ve been able to address issues that affect us all at UNC-Chapel Hill, as well as advocate for policies that serve well our educational and professional interests. In addition, I’m delighted to have been able to contribute in making the Minority Health Conference broadcast a success by working with other dedicated and committed students here at the School.

In the upcoming academic year, I’m asking for you to give me the opportunity to serve our student body one more time as co-president of the School of Public Health Student Government. I hope to promote cross-departmental interactions among our students through collaboration on fun yet meaningful school-wide events and programs. More importantly, I will continue to gain an understanding of the pressing issues we face as students—at the master and doctoral levels—so that I can make sure we speak with one voice on the Dean’s Council and other important boards.

Please vote for me as your next co-president of our Student Government – together I believe we can continue to improve our educational, professional, and social experiences as students!

Mohamed

Jeff Nguyen, MHA Candidate (2010), HPM

Hi, my name is Jeff Nguyen and I’m a 1st year Master of Health Administration graduate student.  I graduated with a BSPH from the School in 2007 and needless to say, I bleed Carolina blue.  Having a perspective of being both an undergraduate and now graduate student in the SPH, I understand the unique needs and desires of many of my classmates to be an effective SPH Co-President.   Already serving as a student leader within my department, I look forward to stepping up and representing students across departments to enrich the learning experience of ALL students at the top public school of public health in the nation.

As always, Go Heels!

Jeff

Candidates for SPH-Student Government Undergraduate Representatives

Chirag Rajpuria, BSPH Candidate (2010), HPM

Hi, my name is Chirag Rajpuria and I’m a rising senior in the undergraduate department of Health Policy and Management. My interest in becoming the future Undergraduate Representative for the SPH-Student Government stems from the potential to build a stable forum for interaction between the Graduates and Undergraduates at the SPH. I truly believe that both parties have the potential to gain from one another; for Undergraduates it’s the opportunity to learn from the experience of Graduate Students and for Graduate students it’s the ability to gain insight into the University that only Undergraduates may have. Additionally, my aim is to voice the opinions for and represent all four of our undergraduate departments, equally.

As any of my friends would tell you, I have grown to truly love the School of Public Health and everything for which it stands. There is no other building on campus, in my humbling opinion, that is as beautiful as the Atrium on a sunny day. The School of Public Health has given me a lot in this past year, and I hope to return some of this value by working for the SPH and its Students throughout my senior year. Therefore, I hope you give me this ability by casting a vote for me as the next Undergraduate Representative for the SPH-Student Government.

Alice Wang, BSPH Candidate (2010), ESE

Hello SPH! I am Alice Wang, a rising senior in the undergraduate ESE program. My passions range from microbiology, solutions to global climate change, to traveling and impromptu dance parties. I love meeting new friends and would love to serve as your undergraduate representative!

Candidate for SPH-Student Government Health Policy and Management Representative

Stephanie Wheeler, PhD Candidate (3rd Year), HPM

Hi HPM!  I am a third year PhD student in the department of Health Policy and Management, and I'm interested in being a representative for YOU to student government.  Student representation is not only important to the future of the School of Public Health, it is imperative to ensure that students’ voices are heard during critical decision making processes.

I currently serve as student representative on the PhD advisory committee in the department of Health Policy and Management.  This position has allowed me to be involved in decision making related to the academic curriculum and doctoral training requirements, admissions, scholarship/fellowship nomination, interdepartmental collaboration, and departmental planning.  For two years, I have been involved with the UNC student chapter of AcademyHealth, one of the leading national health policy and health services research organizations, and I've been a student member of APHA and the Global Health Council for one year.  I believe I possess the experience, perspective, and open-mindedness to be an effective leader and representative for our department's students.

Prior to beginning doctoral studies at UNC, I worked as a financial analyst with trading technology firm, Automated Trading Desk, in Charleston, SC.  Before that, I completed a Masters in Public Health at the University of Cape Town in South Africa as a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar.  In 2003, I graduated with a BS in Biology and a BA in Theatre from the College of Charleston.
