In 1965 Wesley Foundation, the United Methodist Campus Ministry, opened its doors at 214 Pittsboro Street where, for the past forty-three years, we have provided ministry for students, faculty and staff, and a location for many community oriented events, discussions and productions. Over these same forty-three years the campus and student population have grown exponentially, and now we find ourselves in a situation where our ability to minister effectively to this community is limited by our space, funding and staff.

For the past two years we were engaged in plans to rebuild on the current Wesley site. However, at a Town Council meeting in March we learned that the project was not viable in the Cameron McCauley neighborhood where Wesley is located. We are currently looking at alternative locations for the project, including a possible property swap with UNC. We are hopeful that in the coming months we will be able to identify a location near campus that will enable us to develop a project which will:

  • Increase the scope and scale of our service to the campus and community in order to meet the needs of a larger demographic
  • Provide ministry in a substance-free student center and residence hall that meets the current standards for accessibility and safety
  • Upgrade our facility to meet the “green” needs of the world we live in today
  • Increase our residential and nonresidential programming to reflect the growth in the university and community over the past forty years
  • Be financially self-sufficient.
Wesley is at a critical juncture in its history. Keep Wesley, its students, its staff and its Board members in your prayers as we continue to seek options that will keep this essential ministry alive and well. Check back for updates on our progress.
