Wesley Campus Ministry is the presence of the United Methodist Church on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. We are an officially recognized student organization with program ministries designed by, with and for undergraduate students. Though our purpose is mostly to serve the students at Carolina, our presence serves as a ministry to the University community, and we commonly have opportunities and programs for faculty, staff and community members. History... Wesley began as a ministry to students in the basement of University United Methodist Church in the 1940’s. In the late 1950’s a house was purchased on Pittsboro Street and the ministry relocated there. In 1965 we moved into our current facility at 214 Pittsboro Street across from the Carolina Inn. ...Today Wesley is a community of students who are the church. Our ministries of worship, service, fellowship and spiritual growth serve to develop the whole student, to complement their intellectual growth, to help shape leaders for the church and for the world. Wesley is a “home away from home.” It is a safe space where students “wander” – that is, they separate a bit from the church in order to find their own faith. In that context we welcome questions and doubts, and together we wrestle with life’s struggles in hopes that we might learn to live the questions faithfully. Wesley is a family of friends who support and care for one another. From our prayer circles to Big Wesley Love, this is a supportive community that embraces everyone. The student who wants to lead will find a place. The student who wants to serve will find a job to do. The student who wants to rest will find the space to do so. The student who wants to play will find plenty of folks to play with! Wesley is a sacred space. God is here among us: providing sanctuary, guidance, comfort, support – Big Wesley Love. All of God’s Tarheels can find a place at Wesley, a place to be nurtured, a place to be challenged, a place to be loved. |
